“If something is sustainable, it means we can go on doing it indefinitely”.
Activities we can't go on doing indefinitely include the burning of fossil fuels with resulting climate change, the depletion of finite resources, the pollution of land, air and water and the destruction of forests with inevitable loss of biodiversity.
As architects we are able to address many of these issues by designing to conserve energy and by encouraging clients to choose environment-friendly products and materials. This approach not only benefits the environment but provides users with healthy interiors and promotes a sense of well-being.
philosophy
koru architects believe in and promote innovative contemporary design that is respectful of contextual scale, rhythm and materials, but is not dictated by fashion.
We believe that design should display originality and integrity and that our design solutions should be thoughtfully guided by the principles of environmental sustainability. Our approach to each project is unique yet our aims are the same: to create spaces that are delightful, comfortable and affordable.
Creative use of light and space, attention to detail, passive environmental design and careful selection of materials are all characteristics of koru architects project.
sustainable design
Our design solutions will give consideration to building orientation and aim to maximise solar gain. We focus on energy conservation and efficiency to reduce energy consumption and give careful consideration to renewable energy generation systems such as solar hot water, photovoltaics and biomass boilers.
When specifying for projects we give priority to products and materials that are low in embodied energy, from sustainably managed or recycled sources, that are non-toxic and sourced locally where possible. Where demolition is involved we aim to ensure that materials are reused if practical or are separated and recycled.
